Welcome to the 1st Calow Scout Group. We have Beaver, Cub and Scout sections and an Explorer Unit that is affiliated to us. We are a strong, active group providing activities, camps & events for all the sections.
The Beaver Colony meets on Tuesday evening and is for children over the age of 6. Around their 8th birthday they move to Cubs, and as a Beaver at 1st Calow they are guaranteed a place at our Cub Pack.
Beavers undertake a wide range of activities in order to gain both proficiency and challenge badges. Beavers take part in some of the church parades and also district organised events.
The Cub Pack meet on a Wednesday evening and is for children between the ages of 8 and 10½.
There are many badges and awards that Cubs can achieve and the leaders plan their programme to include these. Cubs generally do 2 camps per year at different places. They take part in District competitions and events, and they attend church parades with the rest of the group.
The Scout Troop meets on a Friday evening and is for young people between the age of 10½ and 14.
Scouts work to build up their skills and to gain proficiency and challenge badges with ultimate achievement being the Chief Scouts Gold Award. The troop has 2 weekend camps and a week long summer camp each year, where skills learnt are put to use and many activities undertaken. They take part in district competitions and events, as well as church parades with the group and fundraising activities.
Explorer Scouts were started 10 years ago and although all the units are District based, Canotila hold their meetings at Calow and is closely connected with the group. Canotila are a very active unit offering a wide range of activities. They do regular camps and expeditions.
We have a very strong leader team at Calow, with many years expreience between them. Beavers is run by the same 3 leaders who started the colony in 1985, and Cubs and Scout leaders have over 50 years experience between them. They are all volunteers but put in a tremendous amount of effort preparing and running weekly meetings, and weekend activities. They have group meetings, leader meetings and district meetings to attend.
1st Calow Scouts was started in 1933 by Fr. Handford when he came to St Peters Church as a vicar. The group will next year celebrate its 80th Anniversary with a number of special events planned.
